How to Create a Weight Loss Plan of Action

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Lynn VanDyke The New Year is upon us. Resolutions have been made and resolutions have already been broken. This is the time of year that fitness centers see loads of new members scurry in. These new members have weight loss dreams, but little knowledge of how to safely achieve their goal. Many who started this New Year with fat loss dreams will end up frustrated. Many will quit altogether within one month. Permanent weight loss is absolutely possible with a little planning. Frustration and failure are easy to avoid when weight loss seekers have a doable and effective plan of action. The secret to fat loss lies in the planning and execution of the goal. A weight loss plan of action should consist of a chain of events that eventually leads to a healthy and toned body. It is a series of milestones designed to push the body beyond its daily tasks. The plan would open with a mission statement and close with the specific details. The plan of action would include a starting and ending date. The goals would be finite and measurable. A weight loss plan of action would answer the who, what, when, where and why. Many people make a resolution to lose weight. They may go as far as join a gym. 90% stop there. The other 10% have planned adequately and will succeed with their goals. Their specific fat loss plan of action may have looked something like this: “I want to drop 10 pounds of body fat. I will begin this program today and it will end exactly two months from now. If I feel like giving up I will seek the guidance of a personal trainer and/or nutritionist. I will also remember why I want to drop 10 pounds of body fat. My reasons are that I want to feel great. I want to feel secure, healthy, happy and beautiful. I plan to drop 10 pounds of body fat within two months by starting a cardio and strength training routine 6 days per week. My specific workout routine will be to do a full body strength training routine on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I will do 15-45 minutes of cardio each day except Sunday. I will end each workout session by stretching. I also plan to eat 5-6 small meals throughout the day. Each meal will consist of a lean protein and a complex carbohydrate. I will drink 8 glasses of water throughout the day. Sugar will be limited. Caffeine will be eliminated, but I will allow my morning cup of coffee. I realize this task is hard, but that it is absolutely possible. I will succeed. I have prepared and am totally invested in my health. I will read this plan of action two times per day and stick to it.” The above fat loss plan of action is a road map to success. It describes the person’s goal, it details how the person will achieve their goal and it explains what the person will do when she faces roadblocks. The new year is a wonderful time to set intentions. Weight loss is the direct result of planning and execution. Ensuring success is simple when a plan of action is created. It gives purpose and definition. It can literally be the difference between realizing a fat loss dream or reliving the weight gain nightmare so many people experience each year. Los Angeles Dog Bite Attorneys

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Kent Pinkerton A “dog bite” is a term used in judicial decisions, statutes and local ordinances. In legal terms, “dog bite” refers to a bite wherein domesticated dogs grip a person and thereby cause a wound. Dog bite attorneys assist victims with personal injury claims for dog bite injuries. Every state has different laws regarding a dog owner’s liability for dog bites. Some states follow the common law. Whenever an animal injures a person, a claim must be filed as soon as possible. It is important to seek legal help in the case of dog bites. There are attorneys who specialize in handling dog bite claims. It is a complex process, and requires someone who is well versed in the complicated laws. In the case of a dog bite to a child, it is in the interest of the child that the parents hire an attorney, to protect the child’s rights. Also, to prevent harassment by insurance agents or defense attorneys, as an innocent statement, by the child can be turned into a possible defense, by an insurance company. Dog bites vary in severity. Accordingly damages caused and financial claims are altered. Dog bite claims include recovery of expenses toward medication, treatment, scarring, psychological damages and loss of income due to absence from workplace. This makes it necessary to seek an experienced dog bite attorney who will be able to determine if the victim is eligible for a lawsuit claim. In order to realise a claim as per detailed estimates, it is important to hire services of specialised Los Angeles dog bite attorneys. Jesus Never Preached Poverty

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Rob Marshall A recent Time magazine cover had a picture of a Rolls Royce with a cross as the hood ornament. The headline read: “Does God Want You To Be Rich?” The article talked about a trend that is developing within the American church to preach what some call the “Prosperity Gospel.” I sometimes wonder what all the controversy is about. I remember going to a meeting with some other Christians and listening to the preacher talk about God’s blessings. After the event was over, one of the people I was breathed a sigh of relief and said, “For a minute there I was worried that he was going to start preaching health and wealth.” I believe that I understand what this person was getting at, but I have to ask: “Would you have felt better if he had preached sickness and poverty?” There is a lot of confusion around the topic of God’s blessings in our lives and what it means to live an abundant life. And I have no doubt that some preachers are simply teaching something that a lot of people want to hear, and they may not be all that sincere. But I also believe that God wants to bless His people, and no they don’t have to wait until they get to heaven, and yes they can, and should, create and enjoy wealth in this life. A story from the Gospels that is often cited when talking about the evils of riches is the story of the rich young ruler. This young man came to Jesus asking about what he needed to do so that he could have eternal life. (Matthew 19:16-26) What I find interesting is that Jesus answered his question in some very odd ways. If we look at it from a “Christian” point of view, He said some things that really don’t make sense. The first thing he told him was to obey the commandments. That’s odd because Paul tells us in Galatians 2:16 that no man will be justified by obeying the law, but through faith in Christ. And I know that some people may say, “Yeah, but this was before Jesus died on the cross.” Still, even the Old Testament taught that the righteous live by faith. Even Abraham was justified in God’s eyes because of his faith. God’s word has always taught that we are justified by faith and not by works. But even this young man realized that obeying the law wasn’t enough because when Jesus gave him a list of commandments that he was to obey, he replied, “‘All these I have kept,’ the young man said. ‘What do I still lack?’” (Matthew 19:20) It was then that Jesus said, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Matthew 19:21) The story goes on to say that this man went away sad because he had great wealth. Now before we begin to think that Jesus just told this man he could earn his way in to heaven by giving his money away, let’s take a look at what Jesus said. He just gave this man an incredible promise. He told him that, if he would give his earthly wealth away, he would have treasure in heaven. Jesus wasn’t trying to find out if this man was too attached to his wealth, He was pointing out that this man didn’t really believe in heaven. Let me ask you a question. If God said to you, “Sell everything that you have here on earth, where moths eat it, rust corrupts it, and thieves steal it, give it to the poor and I’ll make sure you can enjoy it forever,” what would you say? Well, if you believed in heaven you’d say, “You got a deal!” This young man, and everyone who trusts in their earthly wealth more than in their heavenly treasures, will have a hard time getting into heaven. Jesus wasn’t preaching to this man that he needed to earn his way into heaven by being poor, He taught us all that our faith, what we really believe, is displayed by our actions. Used Car Lemon Laws

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Ray Walker Although most everyone is aware of the lemon law as it pertains to buying a new car, many consumers may be surprised, and relieved, to know that the lemon law can also extend its coverage to used cars. The used car lemon law, like its counterpart, can change from state to state, but there are some basic details that will help you to decide if you qualify for this coverage. First, when you purchase the used car, it has to come with some type of warranty, either the manufacturers warranty or one written expressly for that car. These warranties include extended warranties and warranties that are written from the car dealership. This is critical. Without any type of warranty, in most states, the coverage will not apply. If you have bought your car privately, chances are remote that you will be covered. If you have met the requirements needed when purchasing your used car so that the used car lemon law pertains to your purchase, there are steps that you need to be aware of that will help if you find youve purchased a lemon. Document, document, document! This, again, is critical. Keep a written account of every repair, every person you have spoken to about these repairs, and what was said in these conversations. Make sure you receive an invoice and a warranty for repairs each and every time your car is in the shop. Even if the repairs were covered under a warranty, get an invoice anyway. Without documentation to back up your claims, damages under the used car lemon law will be hard to prove. Be accurate. Make sure youve detailed the problem clearly and thoroughly and that the repair shop has written everything down just as you said it. Do this every time you take the car in for repairs. Keeping this information clear and precise will help if you need to use the use car lemon law. If your car breaks down on the road, document the time and date and exactly what happened and where. Make sure this goes into the record at the repair shop. Also, before you turn in your car for repairs, make a note of the odometer reading. Have them record this on the invoice. By doing all these things, the used car lemon law should work effectively and could just be the out you need. The Rapture

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Mike Bradley Here is the 50 million dollar question - will there be a Rapture of Gods saints before the Tribulation, or will all of Gods people living at that time have to go through the Tribulation and possibly be martyred for their faith? Im going to go ahead and give you the main Scripture verses dealing with the possibility of a Rapture. There is divided opinion in the Body of Christ as to whether or not there is going to be a rapture. Each one of you will have to come to your own conclusion on this subject per your own interpretation of the Scripture verses listed below. Ill give you my two cents on the subject. Ill point out key words and key phrases in the following verses. As you will see in the following verses, I feel there is very strong evidence from Scripture that there will be a Rapture, and that it will occur before the Antichrist starts the persecution of Gods saints, and before God starts to pour out His wrath upon the earth during the 7 year Tribulation. In other words, it will be a pre-tribulation Rapture. 1. This first verse is very interesting. You already know that one of the names of the Antichrist is the “Lawless One” per the Scripture verse I gave you in my first article. This verse is definitely talking about the Antichrist. Here is the verse:”And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in our time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming.” (2 Thessalonians 2:6-8)You know the lawless one is referring to the Antichrist because then the verse says Jesus will destroy him when He comes back for the second time. But look very closely at the phrase “only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. And then the Lawless One will be revealed.” The “H” in the word “He” is a capital H. That means “He” is either referring to God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit. Since God and Jesus are in heaven right now, the “He” has to be referring to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has always been referred to as the One who restrains evil from getting out of control on this earth. It says that the Antichrist cannot be revealed until He is taken out of the way. Since we know that the Holy Spirit still has to be down here even if there is a Rapture, who is “He” referring to? If there is a Rapture, there still will be a multitude of people that are going to get saved and then martyred. If they are saved, then they are sealed with the Holy Spirit, which means the Holy Spirit is living on the inside of them like He is with us.I believe the “He” may be referring to the “Holy Spirit operating through the Church.” That means that the Body of Christ - the Church will be what is taken out before the Antichrist can be revealed. Think about this. The Antichrist is going to be very easy to spot once he starts to enter into the world scene. All the Scripture verses I gave you on the Antichrist and 7 year Tribulation spell out exactly what is going to occur, and there will be more than enough astute Christians who are going to be able to pick up who he is when all of these events start to occur. With some of the powerful TV ministries that we have in place such as the Pat Robertson 700 Club, I am sure that the Body of Christ will be shouting from the rooftops once the Antichrist is spotted. The word will be spread and it will become very hard for the Antichrist to rise to the kind of power that the Bible is foretelling. I believe that the Church has to be taken out, as the above verse is stating, before the Antichrist can be revealed to the rest of the world. And the above verse states exactly that - that the Antichrist will not be revealed until “He,” who is restraining him, is taken out of the way!!! Once the Body of Believers are Raptured off of the earth, there will nothing that will be able to stop the Antichrists rise to power. The rest of the world is going to be easily duped in believing in this man - especially with all of the “false signs and wonders” that will be performed by the False Prophet on his behalf. I believe the above verse alone is very strong Scriptural evidence that there will be a Rapture of Gods saints before the Antichrist rises to full power. 2. This next verse talks about that those who are “alive” will be “caught up” to meet the Lord in the “air”. Here is the verse:”For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be CAUGHT UP together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17)This verse really seems to be implying that there will be a group of saints who are going to “caught up” or pulled up to meet the Lord in the air while we are still alive! Those words spell possible “Rapture” to me. 3. The next verse tells us a “mystery”- that not all of Gods saints are going to “sleep” - and that this group is going to be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, and that this event will occur at the last trumpet. I believe the Last Trumpet is Gods last call to His people, and that it implies that whoever is saved and born again when this trumpet sounds off, will be Raptured and spared going through the horrors of the Tribulation. I believe that the word “mystery” is being used to let us know that God is keeping the possibility of a Rapture a “secret,” a “mystery” to the rest of the world. That is why all of the Scripture verses pertaining to this event do not “perfectly” spell it out or state it without any shadow of a doubt. There is enough of a “hint” in these verses for His own people to pick it up, but not to the rest of the unbelieving world. Here is the verse: “Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall be changed - in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.” (1 Corinthians 15:51)I believe that the words “last trumpet” tells us this event will occur at the end of times. The words “shall be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye”, really do describe what could be a Rapture - the immediate vanishing or disappearance of Gods people from the face of the earth in the “snap of a finger.” 4. The next verse is from Jesus Himself out of Revelations. Here is the verse:”Because you have kept My command to persevere, I ALSO WILL KEEP YOU FROM THE HOUR OF TRIAL WHICH SHALL COME UPON THE WHOLE WORLD, to test those who dwell on the earth.” (Revelations 3:10)This verse could be literal translation - that Jesus will keep His Body of Believers that are living at this time out of the hands of the Antichrist. He obviously will either do it by Rapturing them off the face of the earth or by providing some kind of physical protection for them if there is no Rapture. My guess is that He will do this by Rapturing them off of the earth. 5. Here is another verse from Jesus stating that we watch and pray that we be counted worthy to escape all the things that may be coming our way. The verse is:”Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be COUNTED WORTHY TO ESCAPE ALL THESE THINGS THAT WILL COME TO PASS, and to stand before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21:36)This verse really seems to be hinting or implying once again that God is going to allow some of us to escape or be prevented from having to go through the events of the Tribulation. 6. Now here are some additional verses that are not quite as strong as the above verses, but do suggest the possibility that God will keep us from these events. “… and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who DELIVERS US FROM THE WRATH TO COME.” (1 Thessalonians 1:10)This verse either means Jesus will deliver us before the wrath comes, which would line up with a Rapture, or it may mean when He comes down for the second time at the battle of Armageddon to put an end to all of the carnage with the Antichrist. “FOR GOD DID NOT APPOINT US TO WRATH, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:9)This verse could be implying that His Body will not be appointed or be subject to the events of the Tribulation - or the “wrath” could simply be pointing to people going to hell for refusing to accept Jesus and His gift of eternal salvation. Conclusion If there is going to be a Rapture, I believe that God will rapture His believers off of this earth sometime before the start of the 7 year Tribulation. I dont think He will wait to the midpoint of the Tribulation where the Antichrist seats himself in the Temple proclaiming himself to be God and then starts all the persecution. I feel the Antichrist will be fully revealed to the world at the beginning of the 7 year Tribulation when he enters into a peace treaty and covenant with Israel, and then allows them to start rebuilding their Temple so that he can eventually get into it at the midpoint of the Tribulation to proclaim himself to be God. And remember the very first verse above, that the Antichrist cannot be revealed until “He” is taken out of the way. And when “He” is taken out of the way, then the Antichrist can be fully revealed to the rest of the world. And “He” in my opinion may be the Church or the Body of Believers that are living at the time of these events. The other reason I think the Rapture will occur sometime before the start of the 7 year Tribulation is that the Antichrist is going to need some time to set things up. Once the Church is taken out, he will be free to start operating at full scale. The first thing he is going to do is convince and persuade the rest of the world to follow him and I feel he will do that by trickery and deception. If he starts the persecution too early on those who will not take his mark, he will risk not being able to gain full control of everything. I feel he will first suck everyone in by peace and diplomacy and the promise of a better world. Then once he has enough of the nations on his side and the Jewish Temple is once more rebuilt, that will be the time that He will then go for all of the marbles. He will seat himself in the temple at the midpoint of the Tribulation, proclaim himself to be God, kill anyone who will not accept his mark, and will then seek total world domination and control. Think about this. This one man, through the power of Satan, will get a chance to have more power and control over the entire world than any other man has ever had during the entire course of our human history. This will be the ultimate ego trip for a power hungry human being. I think that the last three and half years of the Tribulation is going to be the last and final history lesson from God to us. With the Church being taken out of the way so Satan and the Antichrist can operate at full force, I feel that God is going to show all of us how much terror, death and destruction humans and demons are capable of committing if given half the chance without God directly intervening. In three and half years, Satan and the Antichrist are going to cause so much death and destruction on this earth, that Jesus Himself says that had these days not been shortened by God the Father Himself - that no flesh would have been saved! I really feel that Satan, if he knew he had the chance, would set up the entire scenario with the Antichrist to destroy the entire world through nuclear weaponry. Satan already knows he is defeated. He knows he will eventually end up in the Lake of Fire and Brimstone forever and ever. He knows that this is his last chance for mass destruction and terror. He hates all humans and anything to do with God and heaven. If God would allow him anymore time than the three and half years, I really believe Satan would set the world up for mass destruction through nuclear weapons. He would then have the satisfaction that he literally destroyed the entire world before he goes to his final fate. But thank God, He will not allow this scenario to go this far. But God is going to allow it to go far enough to teach us all a lesson that we will never ever forget. He is going to show us how quickly humans can be deceived by Satan and his demons, and the only thing that has kept this world in one piece for the last 6000 years has simply been the power and restraining force of God the Father Himself operating through the Holy Spirit. Bottom line - there is only maximum life with God or maximum death without Him. The last three and half years in the Tribulation will show us what “maximum death” will really be like when God removes His Church off the face of this earth, and he then allows the Devil and the Antichrist to do what they want with the power that will be given to them. After we watch and see all of these events unfold, we will never, ever want to forsake our God again. We will come to the full realization that without God in our lives - that we can never have or find true happiness, joy, love, peace or fulfillment in our lives. Without God in our lives, there is only eventual maximum death, and the last three and half years on this earth is going to prove that point once and for all to all of us. It will be the greatest history lesson that the world will ever receive, and something that we will never ever forget for the rest of our eternal lives. Will there be a Rapture? You will each have to decide for yourselves on the way the above Scripture verses are worded. My conclusion, after putting all the above verses together like a “jigsaw puzzle,” is that there will be a rapture, and that it will occur sometime before the beginning of the 7 year Tribulation. I feel the Rapture is a “mystery” from God, and that it is “hidden” in the above verses. God does not want the rest of the unbelieving world to have full access to this mystery, otherwise people will be accepting salvation for the wrong reasons - to escape the coming horrors of the Tribulation and not with a true, repentant heart to want to accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior for the sinners that we all truly are. Again, you may want to put this article on the shelf in the event that we start to fast approach end time events in our lifetime. The Everlasting Appeal Of Caribbean Destination Weddings

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Shaunta Pleasant A brief glance at the sparking blue waters and white sand beaches will quickly reveal why Caribbean destination weddings are on the rise. More and more people, it seems, are discovering how wonderful it is to get married, and to honeymoon, at one of the many wonderful resorts that line the Caribbean. Whether you are inviting only a few close friends and family members or hosting a wedding party of hundreds of people, it is hard to find a more romantic and appropriate location for a wedding then the Caribbean. ==The Caribbean Is One Of The Best Places To Host A Wedding== In fact, Caribbean destination weddings were among the first destination weddings, and back when the trend had just begun, many Caribbean resort operators took the lead in providing exceptional wedding planning services to their guests. As the market for destination weddings has expanded, the popularity of Caribbean destination weddings has continued unabated, and the Caribbean continues to be one of the best places to host a wedding. The combination of beautiful weather, blue seas, white sand beaches and many resorts makes the Caribbean a hard destination to beat. ==Special Wedding Packages The Caribbean Offers== In addition, the sheer number of resorts in Caribbean hot spots means that it will be relatively easy to find a resort that has experience in planning weddings for their guests. Some of these resorts even offer special packages that include not only the wedding itself, but also the reception, the rooms for the wedding party and even the honeymoon. ==Know What Is Included In Your Wedding Package== Other Caribbean resorts will take a more piecemeal approach to wedding planning, perhaps supplying only the reception hall, the wedding space and perhaps the services of a local minister. Those planning Caribbean destination weddings should be aware of these differences and be sure to ask exactly what is, and is not, including in the price. ==Planning Your Wedding== Planning a wedding can be lots of fun, and planning a great beach wedding in a tropical paradise can be even more fun and exciting. The secret is to start planning early, and to be sure you know exactly what your Caribbean destination weddings do and do not include. This will help you shop carefully and avoid any unpleasant surprises. Shaunta Pleasant is a professional writer and editor on wedding topics. Brain Injury Attorney Careers

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Ken Marlborough There are a large number of specialized attorneys in the field of personal injury. Some of them specialize in brain injury cases and are professionals at assisting brain injury victims. They help the victims receive the required money and support to recover from their state. These attorneys can make people accountable for a person’s brain injury, be held responsible for their negligence, and can be attorneys for anyone with a brain injury. A brain injury can be of various types, the common ones being traumatic, acquired, and anoxic brain injuries. Brain injury can result due to different factors, these are governed by different regulations and accordingly potential attorneys can choose a career. Once individuals pass out of reputed law colleges, they can become apprentices in a good law firm and serve on a daily allowance. This gives the necessary exposure to the real law world and after gaining a reputation, the law firm that offers apprenticeship may retain them, another reputed firm may employ them or they may start a private practice. Traumatic brain injuries are mostly an outcome of someone else’s negligence. There are attorneys that specialize in helping traumatic brain injury victims receive monetary compensation and support that they need in order to get better. A brain injury that results due to cutting of oxygen supply to the brain is identified as anoxic brain injury. These types of injuries are mostly caused through swimming accidents or other accidents in water or during a surgery. Anoxic brain injury cases are complicated and the compensation sought is considerable. Therefore attorneys specializing in this particular field have to be hired for receiving due compensation. A brain injury may be an open injury, which penetrates the skull or a closed head injury, which most of the times results in neurological problems. A very large number of people involved in serious car accidents suffer brain injuries. There are attorneys who specialize in brain injuries resulting from car accidents. There are several groups of attorneys who are experts in brain injury cases. The Green Face of God

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By Mark I. Wallace Christianity has long endowed the natural world with sacred meaning. Every day, material existence food and drink, life and death, humans and animals, Earth and sky is recalled in countless rituals and stories as the primary medium through which God relates to humankind and the wider Earth community. Christianitys central ritual is a group meal that remembers the saving death of Jesus by celebrating the good gifts of creation eating bread and drinking wine. Its central symbol is a wooden cross two pieces of lumber lashed together as the means and site of Jesus crucifixion. Its central belief focuses on the body namely, that God became flesh in Jesus and thereby becomes a mortal, breathing life-form who experiences lifes joy and suffering. And Christianitys primary sacred document, the Bible, is rich with ecological imagery that stretches from the cosmic potter fashioning the first man from dust to the tree of life yielding its fruit to Earths inhabitants. Christianity, then, is a deep green or earthen religion because it binds God to the created order and thereby values the natural world as a holy place. In Finding God in the Singing River, I take up the question of Christianitys earthen identity by way of a nature-based retrieval of the Holy Spirit as the green face of God in the world. The Holy Spirit reveals herself in the biblical literature as a physical, earthly being who labors to sustain humankind and other beings solidarity with one another. The natural world the body of God, as it were is best understood as the primary mode of Gods presence among us today. Without a deeply felt spiritual bond with the Earth community as the enfleshment of Gods presence, it is difficult for Christians and other people of faith to develop long-term, sustainable relationships with the good creation God has made. A partial turn to valorizing nature as sacred ground was made in post-Vatican II papal encyclicals and bishops pastorals where the created order is understood sacramentally as the dwelling place of Gods goodness. But a residual anthropocentric bias in contemporary Catholic thought namely, that the end of creation is human flourishing has prevented a full biocentric turn to ascribing holiness or sacred value to the created order. In the earthen theology I propose, Christianitys animist identity is reawakened through the ancient ideas of incarnation and spirit the Bible teaches that while God is beyond all things, God is radically enfleshed within all things. Apart from a thoroughgoing deep green reawakening of Christianitys central teachings, it will be impossible to experience a spiritually charged connection to the land that is our common home and common destiny. Without this connection, the prospects of saving our planet, and thereby saving ourselves, are not good. Its elemental, my dear While Christianitys primordial identity is fundamentally nature-centered and body-loving, this thesis has historically been at odds with a residual Platonist tendency within Christian theology to emphasize spirit or mind as superior to matter or body. But rather than prioritizing the spiritual over the earthly, Scripture figures the Holy Spirit as a carnal, creaturely life-form always already interpenetrated by the material world. Indeed, the Bible is awash with imagery of the Holy Spirit borrowed directly from the natural world. The four traditional elements of natural, embodied life earth, air, water and fire are constitutive of the Holy Spirits biblical reality as an enfleshed being who ministers to Gods creation. As earth, the Holy Spirit is both the divine bird with an olive branch in its mouth that brings peace and renewal to a broken world, and a fruit bearer such as a tree or vine that yields the virtues of love, joy and peace in the life of the disciple. As a bird or a flowering tree, the Holy Spirit is a living being who shares a common physical reality with all other beings. Far from being the immaterial substance defined by the canonical theological lexicon, the Holy Spirit is imagined in the Bible as a material, earthen life-form who mediates Gods power to other Earth creatures through her physical presence. As air, the Holy Spirit is both the vivifying breath that animates all living things and the prophetic wind that brings salvation and new life to those it indwells. The nouns for the Holy Spirit in the biblical texts rach in Hebrew and pneuma in Greek mean breath, air or wind. Literally, the Holy Spirit is pneumatic, a powerful air-driven reality analogous to a pneumatic drill or pump. The Holy Spirit is Gods all-encompassing, aerial presence in the life-giving atmosphere that envelops and sustains the whole Earth. As such, the Holy Spirit escapes the horizon of human activity and cannot be contained by human constraints. The Spirit is divine wind the breath of God that blows where she wills, driven by her own elemental power and independent from human attempts to control her, refreshing and renew-ing all broken members of the created order. As the living water, the Spirit quickens and refreshes all who drink from her eternal springs. As physical and spiritual sustenance, the Holy Spirit is the liquid God who imbues all life-sustaining bodily fluids with flowing divine presence and power. Moreover, the water God flows and circulates within the soaking rains, dewy mists, thermal springs, seeping mud holes, ancient headwaters, swampy wetlands and teeming oceans that constitute the hydrospheric Earth. The Holy Spirit as water makes possible the wonderful succulence of life as we experience it on a liquid planet sustained by nurturing flow patterns. Finally, as fire, the Holy Spirit is the bright flame that alternately judges evildoers and ignites the prophetic mission of the church. Fire is an expression of Gods austere power. On one level, it is biblically viewed as the element God uses to castigate human error. But it is also the symbol of Gods unifying presence in the fledgling Christian community where the divine pneuma the rushing wind of God is said to have filled the early church as its members became filled with the Spirit, symbolized by, as it says in Acts 2:3, tongues of fire [that were] distributed and resting on each one of the early church members. Aberrant, subversive and creatively destructive, God as fire scorches and roasts who and what she chooses apart from human intervention and design like the divine wind that blows where she wills. God as Spirit is biblically defined according to the tropes of earth, wind, water and fire. The Earths bodies of water, communities of plants and animals, and eruptions of fire and wind share in the Holy Spirits very nature, as she is continually enfleshed through natural landscapes and biological populations. The Holy Spirit is an earthen reality Gods power in the land and sky that makes all things live and grow toward their natural ends. God is living in the ground, swimming through the oceans, circulating in the atmosphere. God is always afoot and underfoot as the quickening life force yearning to bring all denizens of our sacred Earth into fruition and well-being. Idolatrous ecology Pope John Paul II and many bishops as well as countless religious leaders from non-Catholic traditions have broken new ground in religious environmentalism by emphasizing the biblical creation story and the ethic of respect for life as central to a moral response to the ecological crisis. On New Years Day 1990, Pope John Paul II issued The Ecological Crisis: A Common Responsibility. A year later, U.S. Catholic bishops promulgated Renewing the Earth as a response to the crisis. These statements and others emphasize the goodness of Gods creation, and that Adam and Eve were made in Gods image in order to exercise dominion over the Earth in wisdom and love. Human sin, however, destroyed this divine ordering and creation has suffered as a result of human beings continued decisions to not live in harmony with the Creators plan. Pope John Paul and the bishops have regarded the environmental crisis as a moral crisis. Catholic social teaching prioritizes human welfare as the bedrock norm for maintaining the well-being of creation. In his 1990 World Day of Peace address, Pope John Paul made this point in the language of a moral first principle: Respect for life, and above all for the dignity of the human person, is the ultimate guiding norm for any sound economic, industrial or scientific progress. The pope and bishops contended that locating human need at the center of environmental policy-making results in a ripple-like effect in the extension of moral regard for non-human creatures. The logic is that once the needs of the human community are secured, human beings will be empowered to reach out in justice and compassion to the wider biotic community. At the World Day of Peace in 1999, the pope makes a similar point: Placing human well-being at the center of concern for the environment is actually the surest way of safeguarding creation; this in fact stimulates the responsibility of the individual with regard to natural resources and their judicious use. It is understandable why they place human dignity at the center of environmental well-being. On apparent biblical grounds and in light of the environmentally degraded state of most human populations, it is natural to posit the restoration of human dignity as the keystone value necessary for building a morally just social and ecological order. It is assumed that making human flourishing the center of environmental concern will have a green halo effect on other beings. Ecological without being ecocentric Catholic social teaching has another reason for assigning, relative to the whole of the natural order, supreme value to human well-being: It protects Christian ecology from erasing the distinctions between humans and others in the manner of creation spirituality. This anxiety with this type of spirituality is given full expression in the bishops 1991 pastoral statement, which calls for a love for creation that is ecological without being ecocentric. The bishops warn, We can and must care for the Earth without mistaking it for the ultimate object of our devotion. This statement clarifies the difference between ecological theology, which preserves the hierarchical order that separates Creator and creation, and ecocentric theology, which runs the risk of overly venerating nature as an object of worship, according to the pope and bishops. If there is excessive dialogue with nonreligious environmentalism, mainstream Protestant and Catholic theology worries that Christianity will disintegrate into a neopagan reverence for earthen well-being that blurs the distinctions between God, humans and others which some Christians deem necessary for a proper and ordered relationship with creation. In a word, the charge against deep green theology is idolatry, that is, bestowing undue reverence on the creation that diminishes Gods status as the supreme bearer of absolute value. But how well-grounded is this charge? Human dignity the primary focus of classical Catholic doctrine is best secured by maintaining the health of biologically diverse species linked together through intricate feeding relationships. Correspondingly, practical decisions about resource allocations and the like should focus on ensuring the dynamism and vitality of the energy cycle, not on the particular needs of individual participants within the cycle, including individual human needs. In conversation with conservation biology from a religious perspective, we humans should see ourselves as equal citizens of the biotic order, rather than as overlords of creation who possess more value than other beings. Critics regard this subordination of human concerns to the welfare of the whole as a dangerous flattening of important differences, even a kind of ecofascism in which human interests are now located in or subordinated to the wider orbit of ecosystemic interests. The point is not that human happiness is unim-portant in green systems theology, but rather without the well-being of the whole as the paramount concern, attention to human needs and in-terests is not possible. Frankly, if the worldwide system of energy flow patterns collapses due to ecocatastrophe of our own making, then our discussions about whether human beings have more value than other beings will seem academic at best and, at worst, contributory to the very mind-set that gave rise to the collapse in the first place. Home of Gods presence If earthen theology seeks to shift the center of gravity toward ecosystem well-being rather than human flourishing as such, does this make it a type of paganism or idolatry that dare not speak its name? I think not. The witness of Scripture and tradition is to the world as the abode of divinity, the habitation of life-giving Spirit, the home of Gods presence where the rhythms and vitalities of everyday life are sacred. All life is sacred because the Earth is a natural system alive with Gods presence, which supports the well-being of all created things. Gods gift to all beings is this highly complex, biologically diverse Earth where life itself is celebrated in all its fecundity and passion. Sacredness inheres in the God-given capacity of plants and animals to stock and replenish the food chain on which we all depend. God as Spirit is the green force in the Earth who animates the living food chains that make possible the flow of energy for all of us. It is not blasphemous, therefore, to say that nature is sacred. It is not mistaken to find Gods presence in all things. To speak in animistic terms, it is not wrong to re-envision Christianity as continuous with the worldviews of first peoples who bore witness to and experienced divinity everywhere who saw and felt the Spirit alive in every rock, tree, animal and body of water they encountered. God is holy, and all God made participates in that holiness. Thus, when we labor to protect and nurture Gods good creation, we invest all things with inherent, supreme value as a loving extension of Gods bounty and compassion. Sacred, then, is the ground we stand on. Holy is the Earth where we are planted. Discovering the natural world as holy ground has the potential to vivify our primordial sense of belonging to the life-web that our kind and others need for daily sustenance and future well-being. This perspective signals a revaluation and continuation of characteristic Christian themes that celebrate the important connection between human beings and the natural order that sustains them. Christians speak of the embodiment of God in Jesus 2,000 years ago, but now the entire life-web is the incarnation of Gods presence through the Spirit on a daily basis. Christians speak of the miracle of the Eucharist, in which bread and wine become Christs flesh and blood, but now the whole Earth is a living sacrament full of the divine life through the agency of the Spirit who animates and unifies all things. Christians speak of the power of the written word of God, in which Gods voice can be heard by the discerning reader, but now all of nature is the book of God through which one can see Gods face and listen to Gods speech in the laughter of a bubbling stream, the rush of an icy wind on a winters day, the scream of a red-tailed hawk as it seizes its prey and the silent movement of a monarch butterfly flitting from one milkweed plant to another. In the warmth of the sun, the shelter of the encircling sky, the strength of the great oceans and the fecundity of the good land, we have everything we need to recover our kinship with the Holy Spirit and the Earth. By John T Jones, Ph.D. Zeb Washington pranced around the room and went back to his newest telescope. Sure enough! He had his first discovery. It would be in Astronomy Magazine. He called his wife, Latina. Latina: What? Zeb: I see something. Latina: Good, thats why I bought you that thing for your birthday. Zeb: Come back! Youve got to see it too. Latina: You know I cant see into that thing. I only see black. Zeb: Give it a try, Latina. No! The other eye is better. You cant see through your glass eye. Latina: Stop joking, Zeb. Oh! I can see something! Zeb: Its the Sentillon Quaduthunk. Latina: The what? Zeb: Just kidding! The Sentillon Quaduthunk is a machine that vacuums the earth removing all the loose stuff. Taylor Jones, the hack writer, first wrote about it. But this is not the Sentillon Quaduthunk. Latina: You still read that Taylor Jones, the hack writer, stuff. Why dont you read contemporary stuff? The Wal-Mart best seller United States Suffers under Chinese Rule has been out for six months and you havent read one page. Zeb: I hope you dont have a copy of that in the house. We will be hung and quartered on the Lo Chow Gate. Latina: You mean quartered and hung. Its under the mattress. Zeb: It hurts either way. How did you get a copy of that volume? You know its on the Long List of Books We Chinese Dont Like. Get rid of it. Latina: My sister-in-law Rosa smuggled it in from Mexico. A writer calling himself Taylor Jones, the hack writer III, wrote it under the pen name Rolando Garcia. He was supposedly assassinated by agents of the Committee of Oriental Assassins last year in Vera Cruz. Every one knows he escaped. The Chinese agents actually killed a pig that Rolando had put under the covers of his bed. Zeb: One of your fascinating stories, Latina? Latina: Well, actually nobody knows who Rolando Garcia really is. But the pig part of the story is true. The town folks roasted the pig and Rolando attended the fiesta. Hes written another book. Its Why the Chinese Dont Want Mexico. Zeb: Why? Latina: Why, what? Zeb: Never mind. I think I know. The Mexicans refuge to speak any language other than Aztec. Nobody can understand them but the Navajo and they arent talking either. Latina: How did you know that? Maybe we should switch to Pig Laten. Zeb: Or tht ALK language my grandfather told me about that replaced Pig Latin. Thankalk yalkou falkor yalkour talkime. Latina: Yalku alkre walkelcalkome. I never heard of that language. How did you know the Navajos could understand Aztec? Zeb: Research! Okay, Ive got a fix on this now, Latina. Its the Fonlikors from G78899445 cut loose by a stupid bet they lost with the Chnileieeniens. They will come in here with their Avglaitors and slice us and our captors like a loaf of bread in a bread slicer. Latina: The Fonlikors! The ugly killers of the universe. What will we do? Zeb: They are running late. They wont be here until 2085. How about some of those delicious quesadillas you whip up? Zeb hated to lie to Latina. The Fonlikors were right on schedule.
